Sustainability targets surpassed for Gold Coast venue

Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCCEC) is reporting the venue is ahead of schedule with its five-year sustainability plan. GCCEC says it is tracking ahead of key targets in its 2024 to 2028 Sustainability Strategy.

Thanks to a structured waste management plan across all areas of the venue, outcomes have included earning EarthCheck Regional Leader status for waste recycling, diverting 92.91 tonnes of food organics away from landfill to commercial composting, and removing the equivalent of 195.1 tonnes of CO2 emissions from the atmosphere in the process.

The venue’s commitment to sustainability has seen it expand initiatives such as its 10-cent container program, which collected more than 150,000 bottles and recycled them in its second year, with funds raised supporting charitable donations.

GCCEC general manager Nick Jeffrey says the impact of the five-year plan reflects strong progress against long-term targets.

“GCCEC is tracking ahead of its sustainability targets, and that reflects the systems we have in place and the consistency and dedication of how they are applied across the business,” he says.

“When waste is managed well at an operational level, it creates flow-on benefits, from reducing landfill to improving reporting and supporting initiatives such as our container recycling program.

“The results are underpinned by our facilities, operational and sustainability teams, whose day-to-day practices are central to delivering these outcomes.”
