Strength from within: RX builds its next generation of leadership across Asia Pacific

Success in the exhibitions industry has never been determined simply by filling a hall with exhibitors and visitors.

The strongest organisers build markets, understand the industries they serve, create commercial opportunities for their customers and, importantly, develop the people capable of sustaining that success over the long term.

RX has built its position around those principles.

Across Australia and the wider Asia Pacific region, the company operates within a broad portfolio of industries, bringing businesses and communities together through exhibitions that have increasingly evolved beyond the traditional show floor. Data, technology, audience insight and year-round engagement are now playing a greater role, but the fundamentals remain unchanged: strong events depend on strong relationships, relevant markets and people who understand how to bring them together.

That combination has helped RX establish a formidable position in the exhibitions marketplace.

In Australia, the company has developed a diverse portfolio spanning sectors including Renewable Energy, waste, retail, medical and gaming. Its events have also established strong relationships with industry associations, partners and the communities they serve.

Behind that success is an approach that places considerable emphasis on developing talent from within.

That philosophy is particularly evident in a series of recent senior appointments across the Asia Pacific region.

Brian Thomas

At the centre of those changes is Brian Thomas, whose elevation to President of RX Asia Pacific brings more than 30 years of experience with RX to one of the company’s most diverse regions.

Prior to taking on the President, Asia Pacific role, Thomas had responsibility across Australia, Singapore, Korea and Indonesia, providing him with considerable experience across markets that differ in scale, maturity, culture and customer expectations.

It is a breadth of experience that gives him a strong platform from which to lead the wider regional business.

Thomas is also well known within the Australian exhibition industry and has built a reputation over many years for combining commercial discipline with a strong understanding of customers, people and the markets RX serves.

His move into the regional position has, in turn, created opportunities for the next generation of leaders within RX.

Hui Leng Yeow has been appointed Managing Director of RX Singapore following 18 years with the organisation, while Matt Smith has succeeded Thomas as Managing Director of RX Australia.

For Thomas, the appointments are about more than succession.

“Hui Leng and Matt are outstanding appointments. They both understand what matters most, delivering value for our customers, supporting our people and growing the business. You can’t separate those three things. If we get them right together, we succeed,” he said.

Both appointments bring continuity and considerable experience. Yeow and Smith already have a deep understanding of RX, its customers and their respective markets, while their progression into senior leadership provides them with the opportunity to build on strong existing foundations and shape the next phase of their businesses.

“Promoting from within is something we believe in. It shows our people that there are real opportunities to build a career at RX, and these appointments also create opportunities for others to step into new challenges and continue developing their own careers,” Thomas said.

It is an important point.

The exhibitions industry has become increasingly sophisticated. Organisers are expected to deliver not only successful events but measurable commercial outcomes. Exhibitors want stronger leads and greater clarity around return on investment. Sponsors increasingly expect relationships that extend throughout the year, while visitors want events that are easier to navigate, better curated and more relevant to their individual interests.

At the same time, organisers must remain close to the industries they represent.

Thomas believes strengthening leadership is fundamental to meeting those expectations.

“The stronger our leaders are, the stronger our business becomes,” he said.

His regional role also creates greater opportunities to transfer knowledge between markets.

While Australia, Singapore and other Asia Pacific markets have their own characteristics, Thomas sees considerable value in sharing ideas, systems and experience across the network.

“Every market is different, but our customers’ needs and our teams’ challenges are often very similar. The more we learn from one another, the faster we improve and the more value we create for our customers.”

That philosophy is clearly reflected in the appointment of Hui Leng Yeow.

After 18 years with RX, Yeow brings considerable organisational and market knowledge to the Managing Director role in Singapore.

She describes herself first and foremost as a “show curator”, a phrase that encapsulates her view that exhibitions are products that must continually be developed rather than simply repeated from year to year.

“I’ve always believed great businesses are built on great products, and great products are created by talented people who are passionate about what they do,” Yeow said.

Her appointment comes as Singapore’s exhibitions market has become increasingly sophisticated and competitive.

Yeow has watched expectations change significantly during her career. Delivering a professionally organised event is no longer sufficient by itself. Exhibitions need a distinct purpose, a strong identity and an experience that genuinely delivers value for customers.

“Our role has evolved from organising events to creating platforms where industries can connect, learn, do business and grow,” she said.

That evolution does not diminish the importance of face-to-face events. If anything, Yeow believes it reinforces their value.

“There’s an energy and sense of community that only exists when people come together in person. That’s something digital platforms complement rather than replace.”

Her immediate priorities are centred on building on the strong foundations already established by RX Singapore, while continuing to strengthen partnerships, create greater value for customers and provide opportunities for her teams to grow.

Matt Smith

That same emphasis on people and commercial outcomes is evident in Matt Smith’s approach to taking over the Australian business.

Smith’s path to Managing Director has included event direction, sales leadership and wider responsibilities across APAC, giving him experience across several different elements of the RX operation.

Each role, he says, has influenced how he approaches leadership.

“My sales background taught me the importance of commercial discipline and accountability. Moving into event direction gave me a completely different perspective, you quickly learn that every decision affects the customer experience, and ultimately whether an event succeeds.”

Smith takes control of RX Australia at a time when the business is operating from what he describes as a position of strength.

“We have experienced leaders, talented teams and a reputation for delivering world-class events that our customers value,” he said.

There are nevertheless significant changes occurring within the marketplace.

Customer expectations are moving rapidly towards measurable outcomes, and Smith believes organisers must respond by making better use of the considerable data generated through their events and communities.

“Everyone wants clearer ROI and they want it now,” he said.

For exhibitors, that means quantifiable leads and a clearer understanding of return on investment. For sponsors, it increasingly means meaningful engagement rather than simple brand exposure. Visitors, meanwhile, expect organisers to help them make better use of their limited time at an event.

Smith sees data as central to delivering that next level of value.

“We’re sitting on a huge amount of first-party data, who attends, what they’re interested in, how they behave and the opportunity is to turn that into products that genuinely address visitors’ needs.”

That data is gathered through channels including registration surveys, with Smith confirming that its collection is undertaken with consent and in accordance with RX’s data collection and privacy policies.

Better audience insight, he believes, can improve matchmaking, marketing performance and ultimately the commercial outcome for customers.

Growth will remain important, but Smith is equally clear that scale alone is not the objective.

“We’re not chasing growth for growth’s sake. We want to invest in the sectors where we can genuinely lead and continue building strong businesses for the long term.”

That statement perhaps best illustrates the common thread running through RX’s latest leadership appointments.

Thomas, Yeow and Smith may now hold different responsibilities, but their views repeatedly return to the same fundamentals: customer value, strong products, talented people and sustainable growth.

There is also a shared conviction that technology should enhance rather than replace what makes exhibitions valuable in the first place.

As Thomas puts it, “Trust remains one of the most valuable assets in business, and trust is still built through personal relationships.”

It is an observation that goes to the heart of the exhibition industry.

Data may improve matchmaking. Technology may make events easier to navigate. Digital products can extend engagement beyond the days of an exhibition. But ultimately, successful events create environments in which people meet, relationships develop and business gets done.

For RX, maintaining its strength in the marketplace will depend on continuing to evolve those experiences while protecting that fundamental purpose.

The latest appointments suggest the company is equally focused on ensuring it has the leadership depth to do so.

Thomas now takes more than three decades of RX experience into the broader Asia Pacific business, while Yeow and Smith assume responsibility for two important markets with substantial knowledge of RX, their teams and their customers already behind them.

It is succession through continuity, strengthening an established business by giving proven people the opportunity to lead its next stage of development.

And for Thomas, the ultimate measure remains straightforward.

“Our success is closely linked to the success of our customers. When they grow, we grow.”

That philosophy has helped build RX’s position in the market. Its newly strengthened Asia Pacific leadership team is now charged with building on that success.
