The ACT Government has announced plans for a transformative Convention and Entertainment Precinct in Canberra’s CBD, marking a major step toward positioning the national capital as a leading destination for global business events and entertainment.

Included in the 2025–26 ACT Budget, the project will deliver a new, larger convention centre integrated with an 8,000-seat entertainment arena. The development responds to the increasing demand for modern facilities, with the current convention centre operating at capacity.
The new precinct will host major international summits, conferences, and exhibitions, as well as live music, entertainment events, and indoor sports. It is designed to secure Canberra’s place on the national touring circuit and strengthen its reputation as a hub for business events.

Budget investment will progress feasibility and design work to construction readiness, with future stages delivering full design and construction. The initiative is being developed in partnership between the ACT and Australian Governments.
Alongside the entertainment precinct, the Budget also funds the development of a business case for a new Canberra Aquatic Centre at Commonwealth Park. This will include functional design, costings, and pre-construction planning, ensuring the facility provides modern amenities for the community and brings more people into the city centre.
These projects form part of a broader strategy to stimulate economic activity, grow the ACT visitor economy, and create jobs across tourism, hospitality, and construction. They also reflect a commitment to building a vibrant, inclusive and connected Canberra, capable of attracting major events and enhancing the city’s cultural and recreational offerings.
